I became a StoryWay Guide because I missed the chance to record the stories of my grandfather, and I want to do all I can to save others this regret. I am fascinated with day-to-day life of the past and passionate about the preservation of individual stories for the purpose of providing knowledge of “old” ways of living and the contrast it provides for us today.  

My grandfather was a great storyteller. One of my favorites is the one about how he and some other fellows were arrested and thrown in jail for something minor. Not comfortable with confined spaces, he set the mattress on fire so the jailer would have to open the cell and let them out! My uncle and I looked at each other and he said, “Do you believe that story?”  I replied, “I don’t believe my grandpa was ever in jail.” To which my grandfather responded, “I haven’t always been an angel.”

This is one of my favorite legacy stories. There are many more about my grandfather, including his escape—twice!—from POW camps in Poland during the second World War. My only wish is that I had been a StoryWay guide before he passed away and could have recorded his story in a book that would now be treasured by all of his children, all the way down to my great-grandchildren and beyond.  I’m so grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity working with StoryWay to help record family stories and history for future generations. 

Besides working as a StoryWay guide I am a novelist, a gardener, and a grandmother. I love to travel and especially to visit places where notable people have worked and events have taken place. I imagine that the energy of those people and events still vibrates in the soil and the air of those places.
